A motorcycle key in San Diego is not a car key with two wheels. The ignition, the fork lock, the gas cap, and a helmet lock can each take a different blank. Some late bikes also use a transponder chip the engine has to accept. Swift Key San Diego is a referral service. We match you with licensed independent locksmiths. The matched pro or a motorcycle dealer confirms the blank, the cut, and any programming for that VIN.

Name the lock that failed

Start with the part that will not turn. Ignition on the tank or the triple tree is one job. A fork lock that froze after a Pacific Beach overnight is another. A stuck gas cap on a cruiser is a third. A helmet lock on the side is a fourth. Saying “motorcycle lockout” hides which cylinder the locksmith has to open.

Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, and BMW Motorrad bikes that share a parking lot in Ocean Beach can still use different blanks. A scooter with a steering lock under the seat is not the same hardware as a sportbike ignition. Write the year, make, model, and the VIN. On many bikes the VIN sits on the steering neck or the frame, not on a door sticker. Photograph that plate in daylight before you call.

Look at the key you still have, if you have one. A single-sided blade that also turns the fork is common on older Japanese bikes. A fat Harley key with a rubber head is a different family. A chip in the head means transponder key programming may be part of the visit. Do not assume a hardware-store duplicate will start the bike just because it turns the cap.

Broken keys stick in motorcycle ignitions more often than car ignitions. The cylinder is small, the key is thin, and a parking-lot bump on Mission Boulevard snaps the shoulder. Say that the stub is still in the lock. Extraction comes before a new cut. Picking at the stub with a pocketknife usually drives it deeper.

Bring proof you own the bike. Title, registration, and photo ID are the usual set. A licensed locksmith in California has to know who is asking for a new key. If the bike is a dealer hold, a shop project, or still in a previous owner’s name, say so on the call.

Cutting, chips, and what a dealer still owns

Cutting the blade and teaching the bike to accept the key are separate steps. Many older street bikes are mechanical only. A clean cut that matches the ignition, fork, and cap is the whole job. Later models, including some Harley and BMW Motorrad bikes, use an electronic key the immobilizer has to recognize. That is a general description. It is not a year-by-year spec sheet. The matched locksmith or the franchise dealer confirms what your VIN actually uses.

California Business and Professions Code section 6980 treats originating keys and electronic programming of automotive keys as locksmith work when someone does it for pay. A simple duplicate from an existing metal key is a narrower task. Once a chip or a fob enters the picture, you are in licensed locksmith territory. Check the company on the state’s license search before anyone puts a pick in the fork lock.

A motorcycle dealer works from factory blanks and factory procedures. The bike often has to reach the store. Kearny Mesa and National City are where a lot of San Diego County franchise service sits. Trailering a disabled Harley from a La Jolla cliff lot or a campground in Pine Valley is a real cost. Ask whether a mobile locksmith can finish the cut at the bike, and what still has to go to the dealer.

On-site work only helps when the pro stocks that blank. Motorcycle keys are a thinner inventory than Honda Civic blanks. Dup-A-Key and other local shops publish motorcycle pages because the blanks are a specialty. Ask the matched locksmith which brands they actually carry for Harley, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and BMW Motorrad. “We do motorcycles” is not the same as “we have this VIN’s blank in the van.”

If a working key remains, say so. Adding a spare while a working key is in hand is a different process from an all-keys-lost job. Keep that spare off the bike. A duplicate that lives under the seat is the one you lose with the original.

What to have ready on the call

Have the year, make, model, and VIN. Note the color and the plate. Downtown, add the garage name, the level, and whether a loading dock will let a van in. At a campground or an RV park, name the site. A bike on a kickstand in a Mission Beach alley needs the cross street, not the nearest taco shop.

Say whether the key is lost, snapped, or still turning a cylinder that will not start the engine. A car lockout method does not belong on a motorcycle fork. Slim jims and air wedges are car-door tools. They wreck motorcycle bodywork.

Ask who is coming: a BSIS-licensed locksmith employee, and which company name will be on the receipt. California requires locksmith employees to register with BSIS. You can ask for the physical license at the bike. The matched pro invoices you directly. Swift Key San Diego does not collect that payment and does not hold a locksmith license.

Price talk belongs in a written quote from the person doing the work. Swift Key San Diego does not set prices, waive fees, or publish a motorcycle key menu. Ask the locksmith or dealer to line-item the blank, the cut, extraction if a stub is stuck, immobilizer programming if the bike uses a chip, and travel.

An RV locksmith call is a different machine. Coach doors and compartment locks are not motorcycle ignitions. If the motorcycle is strapped to a motorhome, say which vehicle lost the key.

Stay at the bike until you have tried every function the quote named. Ignition on, ignition off, fork lock, gas cap, helmet lock. If a function still belongs at a dealer, get that in the same note.
