Car key replacement across San Diego County
Last reviewed June 2026 · Swift Key San Diego
Losing your only car key used to mean a tow to the dealer and a three-figure bill on top of a multi-day wait. We cut and program most replacement keys on-site in your driveway or parking lot, usually for 30–60% less than a dealer quote. Transponder keys, laser-cut (sidewinder) keys, and most smart fobs, we carry the blanks.

What do homeowners ask about Car Keys?
How much does a car key replacement cost?
Transponder keys for most older vehicles (1998–2010): $150–$220. Laser-cut transponder keys (2010–2018): $220–$320. Smart / proximity fobs (2015+ luxury): $300–$450. The dealer typically charges 40–60% more for the same key and makes you tow the car in.
Can you make a key without the original?
For most vehicles, yes. We use the VIN to cut a key to the original factory code, then program the transponder or fob to the car's immobilizer. Some makes (certain Mercedes, BMW, and newer Hyundai / Kia) require a dealer for all-keys-lost scenarios, we tell you honestly when that's the case.
How long does programming take?
45–60 minutes for most vehicles. Some need a brief programming lockout period (10–30 minutes of ignition-on time) before the new key accepts. We explain the steps as we go.
What do I need to provide?
Vehicle title or registration matching your ID, the car itself (we come to it), and the VIN. If you bought the car recently and the title is in transit, the bill of sale works too.
Do you have keys for my make in stock?
We stock the 30 most common blanks, Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, VW, Subaru, Mazda, and most BMW / Mercedes. Rare blanks we order same-day and come back the next morning. We tell you upfront if your key isn't in the truck.

Locked keys in the car at Target parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. Called and the tech was there in 25 minutes. Used some kind of inflatable wedge and a rod, no damage to the door. Paid what they quoted, no surprises.
Just bought our first house and wanted all the locks rekeyed. Four doors, keyed alike, done in under an hour. The tech explained everything and even showed us how a rekey works. Way cheaper than replacing all the locks like we thought.
My late father's safe had been sitting locked for ten years, we had no combination. Swift Key opened it non-destructively, then helped me change the combo so I could actually use it. Took about 90 minutes. Professional and careful with the safe.
