Safe opening and unlocking
Last reviewed June 2026 · Swift Key San Diego
A safe you can't open is just a heavy box in the corner of your closet. We open most residential and office safes, dial combination, electronic keypad, biometric, and key-operated, using non-destructive techniques whenever the safe design allows. For high-security commercial safes, we bring drilling and scoping tools that open the door without compromising the fire and burglary rating when repair is possible.
What's included in this service?
- Dial combination manipulation (non-destructive) on most residential safes
- Electronic keypad safes, code recovery, lockout reset, keypad replacement
- Biometric safes with dead batteries or failed sensors
- Sentry, Honeywell, Liberty, Cannon, Browning, and most brands
- Small floor and wall safes in homes and apartments
- Office and small commercial safes (fire safes and B-rate)
- Safe combination change after you take ownership
When do you need this service?
- Forgot the combination on an inherited or gifted safe
- Electronic keypad won't respond even with new batteries
- Biometric scanner stopped reading your fingerprint
- Bought a used safe with no combination from the seller
- Lost the override key for a keypad safe
- Safe door won't open even with correct combo (lockout from internal damage)
What do homeowners ask about Safe Opening?
Can you open my safe without drilling?
Often, yes. Dial combination safes can be manipulated, listen for the contact points, recover the combo, open non-destructively. Electronic keypad safes usually have a physical override key on newer models. We always try non-destructive methods first and tell you honestly if drilling is needed before we start.
What does it cost to open a safe?
Residential fire safes (Sentry, Honeywell, First Alert): $150–$275. Better-grade electronic safes (Liberty HD, Cannon): $250–$450. Commercial B-rate and larger gun safes: $400–$600. Price depends on whether we can open non-destructively.
If you drill my safe, can I still use it?
Almost always, yes. We drill specific, pre-documented entry points designed for safe technicians, they're repaired with a hardplate and the safe's fire / burglary rating is preserved when rebuilt to spec. We include the repair in the quote.
My grandfather's old safe has no combination. Can you open it?
Usually, yes. Old dial safes were standardized, we can often pull the serial number off the door and request the factory combo from the manufacturer, or manipulate it open the same day. Bring proof you own it (inheritance paperwork, title, or deed to the address).
Can you open a safe that's in a lockout?
Yes, most electronic safes have a timed or permanent lockout after multiple wrong codes. We can bypass the lockout and recover or reset the combination.

Locked keys in the car at Target parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. Called and the tech was there in 25 minutes. Used some kind of inflatable wedge and a rod, no damage to the door. Paid what they quoted, no surprises.
Just bought our first house and wanted all the locks rekeyed. Four doors, keyed alike, done in under an hour. The tech explained everything and even showed us how a rekey works. Way cheaper than replacing all the locks like we thought.
My late father's safe had been sitting locked for ten years, we had no combination. Swift Key opened it non-destructively, then helped me change the combo so I could actually use it. Took about 90 minutes. Professional and careful with the safe.
