A San Diego property manager does not need a locksmith who “handles apartments.” They need a named job: turnover rekey, keypad guest-code wipe, cluster mailbox, post-move-out opening, or a storefront on the same parcel. Swift Key San Diego is a referral service. We match you with licensed independent locksmiths. We do not manage properties, hold master keys, or set tenant policy.

Name the job, the unit, and who may authorize it

Start with the address, the unit number, and the door. A Pacific Beach walk-up unit door is not the pedestrian gate, the garage cage, or the cluster mailbox on the same courtyard. A Downtown high-rise suite is not the lobby reader. Write the unit, the entrance, and whether the owner, the on-site manager, or a regional office has to be on the call.

Build an authorized-caller list before the first after-hours lockout. The matched locksmith still has to confirm who is asking. California locksmith work includes opening locks for pay. A tenant who calls without the office on the line is a stop, not a convenience. Put the office number, the after-hours number, and a backup name in the file you keep for each building.

Turnover rekey is the weekday job. A tenant leaves. The next tenant should not inherit that key. Lock rekey changes the pins in the existing cylinders when the hardware still works. Replacement is the path when the cylinder is worn, mixed brands block a common key, or a keypad has to come off. Do not assume every door in a 12-unit courtyard can take the same blank. Photograph each lock face.

Keypad guest codes are a separate wipe. A cleaner code, a dog-walker code, and last month’s showing code can still open the door after move-out. Our smart locks for California rentals page is the lease and deadbolt-law conversation. This page is the hardware visit: who deletes codes, who holds the programming code sticker, and whether the locksmith or the office does that wipe.

Cluster mailboxes are a third product. USPS cluster boxes are not a house deadbolt. Some need a postal lock the office does not control. Some are property-owned. Photograph the box and the label. Do not drill a cluster box because a tenant lost a key.

Post-eviction or post-lockout openings need the paperwork the locksmith asks for. We do not list those documents here as a legal form. The matched pro says what they need. Have it at the door.

What a locksmith can do on a rental, and what they cannot

California Business and Professions Code section 6980 treats rekeying, installing, repairing, and opening locks as locksmith work when someone does it for pay. Check the company on the state’s license search. Ask to see the pocket license. The matched pro invoices the owner or the management company directly. Swift Key San Diego does not collect that payment and does not hold a locksmith license.

A commercial locksmith is the right trade for storefronts, aluminum glass, electric strikes, and electromagnetic locks on a mixed-use building. A residential locksmith is the right trade for a unit deadbolt. Say which door it is. Mixing those on one dispatch is how a Tuesday morning in North Park turns into two invoices.

The locksmith does not rewrite the lease. Civil Code 1941.3 is operable deadbolts, already cited on this site’s rental smart-lock page. It is not a blessing for every keypad brand. The owner still owns the hardware decision.

Price talk belongs in a written quote from the person doing the work. Swift Key San Diego does not set prices, waive fees, or publish a property-manager menu. Ask for line items: per-cylinder rekey, extra keys, keypad wipe, mailbox, travel.

Local competitors publish property-manager pages that promise they install everything. This brand does not. The matched independent locksmith performs the licensed work. We match. We do not send “our techs.”

What to have ready on the call

Have the property name, the unit, the entrance, and the authorized caller. Photograph the lock, the mailbox, and any keypad. Say whether this is turnover, a tenant lockout, a mailbox, or a gate. Say whether a master key exists, and who holds it.

Ask who is coming: a BSIS-licensed locksmith employee, and which company name will be on the receipt. Stay until every cylinder that should turn does turn, and until extra keys are counted against the quote.

For a one-off tenant lockout at a house, use home lockout. For the office park reader, use the Rancho Bernardo access control note or commercial locksmith.
